A case study of intermediate high school students
Abstract
Sense of humor is like a miracle in creating effective teaching and learning environments where there is no place for stress and anxiety but instead motivation is enhanced. The present study aims mainly, to explore the effect of humorous texts on vocabulary learning and rate of motivation among Iranian intermediate EFL learners. Having administered a test of reading proficiency, 60EFL learners were selected from a high school and were assigned into control and experimental groups. Also, two English language teachers, based on TOEFL and Humor questionnaire, were selected to teach these learners. The one interested in using humorous text was asked to teach vocabulary to the experimental group. The other teacher taught vocabulary to the control group in the traditional way. Each study group consisted of thirty participants. They were assigned into two equal groups based on a proficiency pretest. The process, time period and sessions of teaching and the materials were the same for both groups but the method was different. But participants in humor class were taught in a well-defined humorous environment managed by the teacher. Considering the control group, the process of teaching vocabulary was conducted in a normal manner. To measure the relationship between humorous texts and EFL learners' motivation in learning vocabulary, a proficiency vocabulary test was given to both groups at the end of the course. Finally based on the data, it was found that teaching vocabulary based on humorous texts was effective in improving learners' vocabulary ability and enhancing their rate of motivation. The findings can also provide pedagogical implications trend as an intrinsically motivating learning tool. In simple terms, comparing the results of pre and post-test indicated that using humorous texts as a treatment had a significant impact on Iranian high school intermediate male and female students’ vocabulary achievement when compared to traditional way.
