In chess, like in the real life, one frequently faces temptations: to grab a pawn, to occupy an open file, to start a kingside attack and so on. There is nothing basically wrong with all these, but before undertaking such a concrete action one should be sure the position is ripe for it. Chess is so complicated that making the right choice by pure calculation is not always possible. This is when general rules and principles come to help us distinguish between what we would like to do and what we actually should do at a certain stage of the game. In other words, it is a matter of establishing the right order of priorities. This series of DVDs aims to prove the importance of taking the good old principles into account before choosing the direction for concrete over the board calculation. The second DVD deals with the middlegame positions where static factors play a determining part, permanently taking into account the inseparable dynamic and tactical elements. Planning is the most difficult part of the game of chess. It is everywhere - we use it from the opening to the ending. A plan is based on evaluation and that evaluation is based on the different static and dynamic elements of the position. But what the chess books don’t describe is the direction of the plan. The aim of every plan is the exploitation of weakness! So, spot the weakness, fix it and then just attack it. There are different kinds of plans - typical plans, based on the structures and analogical plans, based on similar constellations of the pieces on the board. The subject is really big, but the author wanted to show examples of how to construct plans in positions with pawn majorities on the flanks and to teach you how to exploit this element properly. Here Black played 32...Rg2, as he should. After 33.Rg6, he made a not-so-obvious mistake, 33...Kb5?Normally one is dissuaded from flinging pawns forward in the endgame, but that is exactly here what he must do, with 33...b5! 34.Rg4 a5! ( 34...a6 is also probably good and more solid). Now if 35.Ka2 a4! and the king cannot emerge. King is hard on himself, but probably shouldn't be. Many players would be hesitant to push those pawns, and his waiting strategy led to an eventual win for White, who both got his king out and cramped Black with his own queenside pawns.
The second part of the DVD is the test. It is straightforward, and the viewer is encouraged to make plans in most cases, instead of finding single moves. There is no means of evaluating yourself once you complete the test, but I would say a seventy percent score would place you in about the 1800 category, at least in terms of rook endgame knowledge.
The aim of this DVD is to provide you with the practical skills and knowledge that you will need to play a rook and pawn endgame. Based on his own playing experience, Grandmaster Daniel King reveals what is essential knowledge, saving you time in your studies. The first section of the DVD compromises some basics – common positions you simply must understand if you enter a rook and pawn endgame, such as rook and pawn against rook. In the second section common scenarios are discussed, for example, endgames with all pawns on one wing, and endgames where one side has an extra pawn on one side of the board. In the third section you can gauge your knowledge by studying some specially prepared test positions.
