Abstract/

Purpose – This paper attempts to investigate the transformation in the role of the HR function in Greek firms, as a result of the use of internet and technology.

Design/methodology/approach – The paper is based on both quantitative and qualitative methodology. A survey and focus groups took place in order to meet research objectives.

Findings – This paper examines and discusses the development of e-HR use in Greece and the reasons for adoption of e-HR practices focusing on strategy, process and HRM issues.

Findings show that e-HR facilitates the transformation of HRM role into a more strategic one. Driving forces and critical success factors of e-HR adoption and implementation are identified and discussed.

Research limitations/implications – Limits its usefulness to countries that experience a stage of HRM professionalisation and technological development similar to that of Greece.

Practical implications – Identifies critical success factors in e-HR adoption as well as main problems associated with it.

Originality/value – Qualitative results provided by the focus groups give an illustrative picture of the companies presented.

Abstract

    Although turnover is an issue of global concern, paradoxically there have been few studies of turnover across cultures. We investigated the cross-cultural generalizability of the job embeddedness model (Mitchell & Lee, 2001) by examining turnover in an individualistic country (United States) and a collectivistic country (India). Using cross-cultural data from call centers (N 797), we demonstrated that although organization job embeddedness predicted turnover in both countries, different dimensions of job embeddedness predicted turnover in the United States and India. As hypothesized, on the basis of individualism–collectivism theory, person–job fit was a significant predictor of lower turnover in the United States, whereas person–organization fit, organization links, and community links were significant predictors of lower turnover in India. We also explored whether a newly developed construct of embeddedness—family embeddedness—predicts turnover above and beyond job embeddedness and found initial support for its utility in both the United States and India. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

چکیده

     اگرچه گردش مالی یکی از موضوعات نگران کننده جهانی است, متناقضاً مطالعات اندکی درمورد گردش مالی در میان فرهنگها وجود دارد. ما قابلیت تعمیم مدل محاط کار (میتچل و لی, 2001) را با بررسی گردش مالی در یک کشور فردگرا (ایالات متحده) و یک کشور جمع گرا (هند) بررسی نمودیم. با استفاده از داده های میان-فرهنگی از مراکز تماس (تعداد=797), ما نشان دادیم که اگرچه سازماندهی محاط کار در هردو کشور گردش مالی را پیش بینی کرده, ابعاد مختلفی از محاط کار گردش مالی را در ایالات متحده و هند پیش بینی کرده است. به عنوان یک فرضیه, بر اساس نظریه فردگرایانه- جمع گرایانه, تناسب شغل شخصی یک پیش گویی کننده قابل توجهی از گردش مالی پایین تر در ایالات متحده بود, درحالیکه  تناسب سازماندهی شخصی, پیوندهای سازمانی, و پیوندهای اجتماع از پیش گویی کننده های قبل توجه گردش مالی در هند بود. همچنین ما ساختار توسعه یافته جدیدی از خانواده-محاط پیش بینی های-محاط گردش مالی را دورتر و بالاتر از محاط کار کشف نمودیم  و حمایت های ابتدایی را برای سودمندی آن هم در هند و هم در ایالات متحده پیدا کردیم. درمورد مفاهیم نظری و عملی بحث شده است.

Abstract
Translation has become a key, albeit hidden factor in the success of international news as a
marketable commodity and one that is not overtly recognised by journalists. However,
despite the important socio-political role played by translation in the global circulation of
news, general principles governing processes of translation in its production have received
scant attention from both Media and Translation Studies researchers
The core to this study is to explore the complex set of processes that occur in the
translation of political news, and to discover what exactly happens at various points in regard
to who translates, what is translated, where it is translated and by whom it is translated. A
further goal is to ascertain the extent to which trained competent translators are involved, as
opposed to linguistically competent journalists, or, if that is not the case, whether indeed the
former should be involved in processes of news translation.
From a translation perspective the study explores the practice of newswriters
complying with common journalistic strategies such as simplification and reframing to suit
the needs of their readership for the maintenance of dominant political or cultural ideologies.
It also examines the extent to which disregard for, and removal from, original context, as well
as over- or under-emphasis of particular terms or phrases actually happens in translated news
texts in the Spanish-English context, and the effect that this may have at the point of
reception by the new readership.
By comparing three sub-corpora of journalistic source and target texts through critical
discourse analysis, and by taking into account translation processes through ethnographic
research in international news outlets, the ultimate goal is to identify the causes that can
trigger textual manipulation. Using three case studies comprising political news events that
were originally reported in Spanish at the source of the events, and which were subsequently
reported in UK and US national newspapers, the study investigates the extent to which
transformations occur through translation in the representation of political news events, how
they might occur, who is involved in the process and what effect any transformations might
have on readers.
